Pool Pumps, Filters, Heaters & Equipment in Polk County

The equipment pad is the heart of the pool. Upgrading the pump, filter, heater or controls can cut energy use, extend the swimming season and make the pool easier to run.

What is on the equipment pad

Every pool depends on a few core components. The pump moves water, the filter removes debris, and a sanitizer such as a chlorinator or salt system keeps the water safe. Many pools also have a heater, lighting and a control or automation system. When one part fails or gets old, it is worth looking at the whole pad, because the parts work as a system.

Equipment trouble is often urgent. Call 863-216-6735 at any hour and tell us what is happening.

Pumps: why variable-speed matters

The pump is usually the biggest energy user. Variable-speed pumps can run at low speeds for most of the day, which uses far less electricity than older single-speed models. HomeGuide says variable-speed pumps can save 50% to 80% in energy compared with single-speed pumps, and that single-speed pumps stopped being manufactured in 2021 because they did not meet federal Department of Energy efficiency standards. If your pump is failing, a replacement will very likely be variable-speed.

Filters

Cartridge, sand and DE (diatomaceous earth) filters each have trade-offs in filtration quality, cleaning effort and water use. Sand filters are simple but use water when backwashing. Cartridge filters avoid backwashing but need the cartridges cleaned and eventually replaced. DE filters filter very finely but need more care. Size matters too. A filter that is too small for the pump and pool will struggle and need cleaning more often.

Heating for Central Florida

Polk County winters are mild, but pool water can still get too cold for comfortable swimming from roughly December through February. Heat pumps are a common choice in Florida because they work efficiently in warm air. Gas heaters heat quickly regardless of the weather and suit spas or occasional use. Solar panels have low operating costs but need suitable roof space and sun. A solar cover is an inexpensive way to hold heat with any system.

Sanitizing, automation and lighting

Salt systems generate chlorine from dissolved salt, and many owners like the softer feel of the water. The salt cell needs periodic cleaning and eventual replacement. Automation lets you schedule the pump, heater, lights and features from a panel or phone, which makes variable-speed pumps easier to run efficiently. LED pool lights use less energy than older incandescent lights and often offer color options. Any lighting or electrical work around a pool should be done by a licensed professional.

Equipment and Florida conditions

  • Lightning and power surges. Central Florida sees frequent summer thunderstorms. Ask about surge protection and proper bonding and grounding.
  • Heavy rain. Storms raise water levels and dilute chemistry. Equipment and automation that handle this well save time.
  • Sun and heat. Equipment pads in full sun run hot. Shade and ventilation help motors and electronics last.
  • Storms. Before a hurricane, follow your contractor's guidance on shutting off power to equipment.

Permits

Polk County's Building Division FAQ says pool repairs need a permit when they involve electrical, gas or solar work or additional equipment, and that mechanical and fuel gas work generally needs permits. Adding a heater or new circuits is likely to need a permit. Like-for-like replacements may be treated differently, so confirm with your contractor and the building department that covers your address.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Is the pump and filter correctly sized for my pool and plumbing?
  • What will this equipment cost to run each month?
  • Do any parts of this job need a permit, and will you pull it?
  • What warranties come from the manufacturer, and what do you cover on installation?
  • What Florida license do you hold? Verify it with the DBPR license search.

Pool Equipment questions

How long do pool pumps last?

It varies with the model, run time and conditions, but many pumps last several years to a decade. A pump that is loud, overheating or tripping breakers should be checked promptly.

Is a heat pump worth it in Polk County?

Many Central Florida owners find heat pumps efficient because the air stays fairly warm much of the year. They heat more slowly than gas heaters, so they suit pools kept warm on a schedule.

Can I convert my pool to salt water?

Usually, yes. Angi lists saltwater conversion at about $500 to $2,500. Ask whether your finish, heater and metal fixtures are compatible with salt.
